With a tip of the hat to the folks at the Wired.com Auto Blog, we have news of Volkswagen coming VERY close to debuting a two-seater, mid-engine roadster. Rumor is this car may be available in 2011.
Word has it the convertible roadster gets 42mpg and is as eco-friendly as just about any hybrid on the road today.
To accomplish the fuel economy and performance specs for this car, VW is using 3 tricks. 1) Turbocharging -- this gives the roadster 177 horsepower, and with a 2.0 litet diesel. 2) Automatic start-stop technology -- this helps improve fuel economy 3) Regenerative braking.-- this helps to power on-board systems such as the A/C.
Top speed is estimated to be 140mph. The tranny is a six speed with paddle-shifting.
